Bringing Theory to Practice Meetings

The Bringing Theory Practice Project is committed to exploring and advocating the academic community's interest, support, and valuing of engaged student learning and its relationship to the mental health and civic development of individuals and their communities. Specifically, the Project currently considers how forms of engaged learning (including, but not limited to civic or service-learning and community-directed collaborative research) could be effective as part of intervention or prevention strategies to address two debilitating conditions for college and university students: substance abuse and certain types of depression. Currently, BTP sponsors two types of meetings to explore these issues:

• The Annual Working Conference brings together faculty members, students, and administrators who are interested in exploring how the academic strengths of the institution can be effective in addressing the connection among student learning, health and civic development.
• Periodic Leadership Colloquia focus on the roles of different campus constituencies in addressing the mental health and civic development of students.
